Changing Your Passwords

Changing Your Passwords

Aug 15, 2022

Long, randomly generated passwords that are created for each of your logins helps to protect your accounts from cybertheft and account takeover. Keeper’s Password Generator can create and securely store a strong, unique password for each of your sites and apps with the click of the dice. Be sure to refer to a website’s password requirements when creating a new password. You can adjust a password's characters to meet a site’s unique requirements by dragging the slide bar left and right and utilizing the character type check boxes.

Keeper’s Password Generator is a very useful, time-saving security feature, but it will not automatically change a website's existing password for you. You must visit a site’s "Change Password" page, usually located in the account or privacy settings of the site, to change your existing password to the new, stronger password. This video will review two ways you can change your passwords using Keeper.

The first method uses KeeperFill’s Password Change feature, making the process of changing high-risk passwords easy. Install our KeeperFill Browser Extension to take advantage of this time-saving feature. For more information, please see our KeeperFill video which I’ve linked below.

To change a password using KeeperFill, navigate to the site you want to change the password for, in this example I am using Twitter. Now locate the “Change Password” page which is usually located in the account or privacy settings of the website. Once there, you will automatically receive a prompt from Keeper asking if you would like help changing your password. By clicking Yes, Keeper will guide you through a few quick steps to change your password and simultaneously update the record in your vault. If Keeper doesn't automatically appear, click on the Keeper lock in the password field and choose “Change Password” from the menu options.

Keeper locks will appear in each password field that is displayed. The first few prompts will ask you to click on the Keeper locks one by one to automatically fill your current password then generate and fill a new password. You will see as I move through each step, the KeeperFill instructions simultaneously progress, directing you on what to do next.

Now, I’m asked to save the changes I made to my vault. By clicking Save, the corresponding record will automatically update in my vault with the new password. Now, you will be asked to submit the change on the website, often by clicking Save or Submit. As you can see here, my password change was successful and accepted by the site.

As a final step, upon submitting the change or refreshing the page, you will have an opportunity to confirm that the change was successful by clicking Yes or reverting the change if, for example, you made a mistake or if the site did not accept your password update.

Now I will review the second method which involves changing your password manually using copy and paste. We recommend this as an alternative to using KeeperFill’s method, if for example, you find that the change password page of the site you are visiting doesn't display a similar variation of the following 3 entry fields: “Current Password”, “New Password” and “Confirm Password”. This is because, as you saw moments ago, KeeperFill’s password change feature most seamlessly changes your password for you when the “old” password and “new” password fields are present on a single page.

To begin, from your vault, open the record you want to change the password for. Next, copy your current password by clicking the copy button that is revealed by hovering your cursor next to your password. If you have this password memorized, you can skip this step.

Now navigate to the record’s website in a new window or tab which I already have open here or can click the website launch button from your vault and login to your account as usual. Next, locate the site’s “Change Password” page. If prompted, enter your current password by either typing it in by memory or by using the paste command on your keyboard or right-click context menu.

Now, return to your vault and click Edit, then click the dice to automatically generate a new, secure password for the record. Click the eye icon to reveal the password, highlight it with your cursor and copy it by using the copy command on your keyboard or right-click context menu.

Return to the site’s change password form and paste the new password in each of the required fields and submit the form. If the password update was successful like it was here, be sure to return to your vault and Save the record that now contains your new password.
