Cyber Threat Intelligence - Top Gun Style
by Markus Auer, CTI Advisor and Regional Manager, ThreatQuotient
"In the opening scene of 1986´s Top Gun, Tom Cruise "Maverick" inverted his F-14 fighter jet and gave the "bird" to his Soviet opponent. With this action, Cruise assured himself a lighthearted place in the history of the Cold War. What that scene also did, however, was providing one of cinematography´s great examples of a key concept of air-to-air combat: the OODA loop. Developed by military-strategist and US Air Force Colonel John Boyd, the OODA loop (Observe,Orient, Decide, Act) is a four-step approach to decision-making, that focuses on gathering available information, putting it into context and quickly making the most appropriate decision what action to take, while also understanding that changes can be made as more data becomes available. Originally developed for dogfights, the OODA loop is nowadays applied to a variety of fields in business and law enforcement. In this speech we will talk about what CTI is, how we get from raw threat data to actionable threat intelligence and how applying the OODA loop can help to establish a holistic Cyber Threat Intelligence program.
