According to France24’s Julia Sieger, there are predicted to be 3.5 billion cyber attacks during this year’s olympic games. This is 8 times as many attacks compared to the Tokyo Olympics, many of them targeting critical infrastructure.
It’s estimated that around 4 billion people are expected to watch this year's olympic games. Experts predict that cyber criminals and hacktivists will surely strike in an effort to cause disruption and chaos. Not only this, but cyber attacks on critical infrastructure, financial institutions, and large-scale data centers are expected to occur in mass.
"With billions of eyes watching the Games this summer, we must trust that the headlines will be dominated by stories of sporting excellence and not by cybersecurity failures.” Rob Sloan VP, Cybersecurity Advocacy, Zscaler
Organisations must take the necessary steps to prepare for a potential onslaught of cyber attacks. The best way to do this is by taking note from the olympic athletes themselves - it’s time to train relentlessly. Building resiliency as an athlete takes a lot of effort but it pays off in the end by leading to better performance, endurance, and recovery. The same can be said about cyber resiliency.
